SAMARA, July 2 (Itar-Tass) - Twelve children with suspected serous meningitis have been hospitalized in Russia’s Samara on the Volga River over the past four days, sources from the regional healthcare ministry told Tass on Tuesday.
“They are in a satisfactory condition, and there are no serious cases among them,” the sources said, noting that 13 people with serous meningitis underwent treatment and were discharged from Samara hospitals in May-June.
“Over the recent years the number of serous meningitis cases in the Samara region has been subsiding. This growth in meningitis cases is a normal seasonal event, connected as a rule with bathing in water reservoirs,” the sources stressed.
Since early June, outbreaks of enetroviral infections that might cause meningitis have been registered in various regions of Russia. The disease is especially dangerous for children. The bulk of meningitis cases were reported from Russia’s southern city of Rostov-on-Don. Fifty-five patients were diagnosed as having serous meningitis. One child died. Later, reports about meningitis cases in children came from Astrakhan, the Lipetsk region, Voronezh, Volgograd, Nizhny Novgorod, Kursk, and Moscow.
