BERLIN, June 27. /ITAR-TASS reporter Vladimir Smelov /. During further negotiations of the European Union with Turkey about the prospects for membership the EU community will insist on the observance of fundamental human rights by Ankara. This was stated today by German Chancellor Angela Merkel when delivering a speech in the Bundestag.
As she said, “Turkey is an important partner” of the European Union. “However, our European values, such as freedom of demonstration, freedom of expression, providing legal statehood, freedom of religion are of persistent importance,” said the head of German government. These values “are not negotiable for us,” added the Chancellor.
In her point of view, the decision to continue negotiations this autumn about the prospects for Turkey's membership in the EU “was essentially correct.” In this case, no one is going to pretend that violence manifested in this country against protesters does not mean anything, said Angela Merkel.
