MAKHACHKALA, June 13 (Itar-Tass) - Rector of Dagestan State University Murtazali Rabadanov was appointed Acting mayor of Makhachkala on Thursday, a source from the administration of the Dagestani president told Itar-Tass.

The former mayor of Makhachkala, Said Amirov, was detained on June 1 and later placed under arrest on suspicion of organizing a murder conspiracy against an Interior investigator.

Amirov's First deputy mayor, Bagand Magomedov, had been acting city mayor prior to Rabadanov's appointment to this post.

Acting head of Dagestan Ramazan Abdulatipov said he had long been pondering over a list of the proposed candidates and decided "to recommend the rector of a classical university, the man educated in Europe, Murtazali Khulataevich Rabadanov."

"This is another signal to the effect that well-educated and modern people should come into power in Dagestan," Instgaram quoted Ramazan Abdulatipov as saying on its website. Abdulatipov gave instructions to the government, concrete ministries and the administration of the Dagestani president, asking them to discuss jointly with the newly appointed Acting mayor measures of priority importance for ensuring normal work of vitally important facilities in the city, renewing the activities of different sectors of the city economy and bringing in order transport fares, the cost of communal and other services provided to the residents of Makhachkala.

"All these measures should be open and taken jointly with the citizens. Makhachkala should have the most effective system of management. I wish success to the new acting mayor of Makhachkala," Abdulatipov said.
