MOSCOW, June 12 (Itar-Tass) - People in this country on Wedneday mark the Day of Russia, the main State holiday, which reminds one of the origin of the establishment of a new Russia statehood.
This day was put on the list of memorable dates in 1992. The holiday gained its official status in 1994 when it was declared to be a day-off. The holiday reminds people of the events of June 12, 1990, when the first Congress of People's Deputies of the RSFSR adopted a Declaration on the State Sovereignty of Russia whcih at that time still remained part of the Soviet Union. The first president of Russia was elected by popular vote this day a year later.
President Vladimir Putin will present State Prizes for 2012 to outstanding citizens of the country on Wednesday. At the close of the presentation ceremony, a ceremonial reception will be given in the Kremlin's Cathedral Square. A concert is to be given in the Red Square in the evening.
Festivities on the occasion are to be held throughout the country, and Moscow is no exception in this respect. The City Council expects that a Kremlin Mile running event will be held; the festival of the Moscow press is to continue on Poklonnaya Hill and a Maxidrom music festival will take place in the grounds of the Chkalov aeroclub on Volokolamsk Road. A traditional procession of Opposition members from Kaluga Square to Bolotnaya one has been announced as well.
This time, a congress of the All-Russia Popular Front (known for its Russian acronym ONF) will undoubtedly become quite an event. The Organization, which was brought into being in May 2011, will be transformed into a public organization with a legal status. The ONF is expected to become the broadest public coalition in support of RF President Vladimir Putin.
Valentina Matviyenko, Speaker of the Federation Council upper house of the Russian parliament, is convinced that, following the adoption of the Declaration on the State Sovereignty of the RF, the building of a new State began. "We are yet to do much to implement progressive economic and social reforms, develop democratic principles, and raise the country's prestige in the international arena," she emphasized in an official message of greetings, expressing confidence that only through joint efforts it is possible "to render Russia strong and prosperous power and worthy member of the world community".
