ROSTOV-ON-DON, June 10 (Itar-Tass) - The number of children infected in a kindergarten of Russia’s southern city of Rostov-on-Don has grown to 103, the chief sanitary doctor of the Rostov region said at a session chaired by region’s governor Vasily Golubev.
According to Mikhail Solovyov, 48 children remain in hospitals and 55 are under medical supervision at home. Five children are in intensive care, he stressed.
“It is difficult to call infection forecasts in Rostov-on-Don favorable, as the incubation period of the virus is 21 days,” the chief sanitary doctor said. He said the ECHO 11 virus is an old one, it is resistant to the environment and hits mainly small children. He said 40 years ago this virus hit over one million people in Singapore. “Outbreaks were fixed in Russia, but medics learned to cope with them,” he added.
On Monday, restrictions were imposed in that southern city on mass events with the participation of children, and bathing at local beaches will be also restricted. Special attention is focused on suburban recreation camps for children.
A total of 1.2 million rubles have been allocated to deal with an outbreak of infection in Rostov-on-Don, which was fixed on June 4-5. One infected child died.
