EU wages active campaign to discredit Russian gas as a source of energy

The purpose of this information campaign is to exert pressure at negotiations for prices and terms of gas contracts with Russia

BRUSSELS, June 2 (Itar-Tass) - Germany and other European countries continue a campaign to discredit the use of Russian gas as an energy source, according to Valery Yazev, the president of the Russian Gas Society and first deputy head of the Russian State Duma Committee for natural resources, management of natural resources and environment.

"The information space is full of reports declaring the primacy of alternative energy sources and debating the harmful effects of nuclear energy and excessive dependence on Russian gas,” Yazev said at a briefing at the VIII international conference “Russia-EU Energy Dialogue. Gas Aspect” on May 30.

The purpose of this information campaign is to exert pressure at negotiations for prices and terms of gas contracts with Russia. Yazev paid attention to the existence of a strong alternative energy lobby, which lives off subsidies from the European budget.

“This is a matter of social psychology, politics and the lobbying of interests. That is why the gas image is far below the decent place that it is supposed to occupy,” the Russian MP said.

The forum was organized by the Russian Gas Society and the European Union of Gas Industry. It was attended by representatives of Russian and European gas companies, the European Commission, the Russian Energy Ministry, deputies of the European parliament and the Russian State Duma, experts and diplomats.
