MOSCOW, May 28 (Itar-Tass) - Russia hopes that the EU states will not deliver weapons to Syrian militants, Russian Permanent Representative in NATO Alexander Grushko told reporters during a videoconference Moscow-Brussels on Tuesday.
“As for the lifting of the embargo on the supplies of weapons and military hardware to Syrian rebels, we hope that there will be no such supplies,” he said. “Since the most important thing today is to send absolutely clear signals that there is no other way, but the political way for settlement,” he noted. “Military decisions will result in heavier consequences,” Grushko added.
Speaking on Russian military supplies in Syria, the Russian permanent representative noted, “We will fulfil the signed contracts.” In his view, Russia “acts completely according to the international law.” “A reliable system of export control works in our country. Those weapons, which we deliver to Syria, are defensive,” Grushko pledged.
The diplomat also noted that “today all the efforts should be focused on how to prepare a conference Geneva-2 qualitatively.” “Everybody wants that Geneva-2, at which the Syrian issue will be considered, will bring successful results and will herald the transition to the search for political ways to settle the situation in Syria,” Grushko remarked.
“Our position remains unchanged that it is needed to involve all the resources to talk all the parties into getting down to the table of negotiations,” the diplomat pointed out. “It is needed to refrain from the plans, which would contradict this logic. Naturally, I consider military and non-military support for the opposition as such steps,” he indicated. “This just adds fuel to the fire,” Grushko said in conclusion.
