EU lift embargo on supplies of weaponry to Syrian militants

Catherine Ashton said the member-states have agreed to refrain from supplying the militants with military hard

BRUSSELS, May 28 (Itar-Tass) - European Union has taken a decision to lift the embargo on supplies of weaponry to the Syrian irreconcilable opposition, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said late night Monday.

Upon the end of a conference of EU foreign ministers, the participants also expanded the existing financial and political sanctions against the administration of President Bashar al-Assad.

Along with it, Baroness Catherine Ashton, who is the EU’s High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, said the member-states have agreed to refrain from supplying the militants with military hardware for the time being in spite of a formal removal of the embargo.

She also said that the 27 ministers attending the meeting had supported the organization of a new conference in Geneva on the Syrian conflict settlement.
