MOSCOW, May 1 (Itar-Tass) - Russia will expend a trillion rubles /USD 1= RUB 31.9/ through to 2015 for development of the nuclear power industry, Mikhail Ulyanov, the director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s department for security and disarmament said Wednesday in a comment on the discussions on nuclear nonproliferation that were held in Geneva in April.

Russia has started designing the reactors that generate electric power and, in addition to it, desalinate water, which means that “they may become instruments of development for many countries.”

“Nuclear security and nuclear power production safety should be upgraded with the aid of new technological solutions,” Ulyanov said. “In this connection, we find it important to utilize both active and passive systems of safety in the design of nuclear plants. Projects of this kind already exist.”

He underlined an important feature of next-generation nuclear power plants, saying they include double reactor containment, passive heat removal systems, and specialized cooling units.
