CARACAS, April 30 (Itar-Tass) - Chairman of Venezuela’s Communist Party, Jeronimo Carrera, died Monday at the age of 91.
He was one of the oldest members of the party, the ranks of which he joined 67 years ago.
Carrera’s anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist convictions brought him two jail terms - in the 1950’s when Venezuela was ruled by Marcos Evangelista P·rez Jim·nez and in the early 1960’s after the arrival at power of the government led by Romulo Betancourt.
He was among the founders of the country’s major trade union association -- the Confederation of Venezuelan Workers - and was editor-in-chief of Tribuna Popular, the Communist Party’s newspaper.
Carrera is the author of a book titled ‘Bolivar from the Marxist Viewpoint’.
President Nicolas Maduro expressed condolences to Carrera’s family, friends and party associates. Jeronimo Carrera was a truly honorable and glorious personality, he tweeted.
Venezuela’s Communist Party is the oldest political force in the country. It was set up in 1931 and had to operate clandestinely at the initial stages of its history.
The Communists gave an all-out support for course of the late President Hugo Chavez at building the Socialism of the 21st century.
