Shinzo Abe hopes to agree with Putin on new start to peace treaty talks

That will be the first trip of the Japanese prime minister to Russia over the past 10 years

TOKYO, April 23 (Itar-Tass) – Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has stated that he hopes during the upcoming visit to Moscow on April 28-30 to agree with Russian President Vladimir Putin on a new start to the negotiations on a bilateral peace treaty. On the eve of the first trip to Russia over the past 10 years, the Japanese prime minister gave an exclusive interview to Itar-Tass First Deputy Director General Mikhail Gusman.

“During the visit,” the prime minister said, “Firstly, I would like to establish a personal trust relationship with the Russian president. Secondly, I would like to outline the possibilities for the full development of our relations in the future. Thirdly, I hope to agree on a new start to the so far stalled negotiations on a peace treaty between the two countries, to give an impetus to our relations and to make sure that this visit opens new long-term opportunities for their development.”

“I’m going to Russia now with great pleasure,” he continued. “Russia is a very important neighbour for Japan, the relationship between our two countries provides richest opportunities. Japan and Russia have common benefits and common interest in maintaining peace and security in the Asia-Pacific region. Russia is a country that has a vast territory and abundant resources. Japan has high technology. Therefore, our countries naturally complement each another.”

“Two years ago, “the prime minister noted, “after powerful natural disasters in eastern Japan, Russia immediately sent a big rescue team to us, and we do not forget about it. After that Patriarch of Moscow and All-Russia Kirill visited the affected areas where restoration works are underway, including a damaged Orthodox Church has been restored.”

“President Putin,” Shinzo Abe stressed, “has a clear-cut objective - to build a strong and prosperous Russia. And my current objective is to build a strong Japan. Thus, President Putin and I share the same values and ideals.”
