MANAGUA, April 21 (Itar-Tass) - Chief of Russia’s General Staff Valery Gerasimov arrived in Nicaragua on a working visit on Sunday.
Army General Gerasimov will stay in Nicaragua till April 23 and hold talks with the political and military leadership on the development of military and military-technical cooperation, the Russian Defence Ministry’s press service reported.
“Gerasimov is expected to meet Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and Commander-in-Chief Julio Cesar Aviles Castillo,” the press service said.
“Our armed forces maintain close relations. Military cooperation develops and we’ll do our best to continue their development,” Gerasimov said.
Answering a question if the Russian Armed Forces interact with Nicaragua in fighting drug trafficking, the Russian general said, “Other agencies deal with this issue in Russia.”
“I know that the Nicaraguan Armed Forces take part in this work. We will make necessary contribution,” he said.
“During the visit, Gerasimov will take part in a ceremony of opening a training centre for specialists of Nicaragua’s Ground Forces,” the press service said.
The parties “will also open an ammunition disassembly plant with Russia’s contribution”, the press service said.
