MOSCOW, March 16 (Itar-Tass) - Five gunmen were killed in a special operation at the Chechen-Ingushetian border, a source at the National Antiterrorism Committee told Itar-Tass on Saturday.
A group of 15 gunmen was discovered by FSB and police forces in a forest area in the mountains on the border between the Chechen Republic and the Republic of Ingushetia during a special operation conducted to find groups of gunmen operating in the North Caucasian region. The area where the gunmen were detected, two kilometres away from the settlement of Dattykh, was blocked by forces of the Federal Security Service and the Interior Ministry troops, the NAC source said.
Five gunmen attempted to break through the cordon with the use of submachine guns and grenade launchers. They were neutralized by return fire. They have yet to be identified.
Four submachine guns, three grenade launchers, grenades and a lot of ammunition were found at the site.
A pocketbook with detailed description to make homemade remote-controlled explosive devices was found in a knapsack of one of the gunmen.
There were no losses among the law-enforcement forces and civilians.
The operation is continuing. Investigation work is also underway there.
