UNITED NATIONS, March 5 (Itar-Tass) – Russia is ready to support a United Nations Security Council resolution envisaging more sanctions against North Korea in response to its February nuclear test, Russian permanent representative at the United Nations Vitaly Churkin told journalists on Tuesday.

The voting on the document prepared by the United States and China will be held on Thursday, after it is scrutinized by Security Council experts, he added.

The text of the resolution that was presented on Tuesday “has been considerably changed as compared with the original edition,” he said. “The current draft is focused on North Korea’s nuclear missile program. This is what we wanted calling for an appropriate reaction of the United Nations Security Council to North Korea’s nuclear test.”

The text was approved by China’s and South Korea’s United Nations ambassadors, Li Baodong and Kim Sook. The latter expressed confidence that the document would be passed by the end of the week.

North Korea carried out its third nuclear test on February 12. Immediately after that, the United Nations Security Council members issued a statement condemning Pyongyang’s actions.
