PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, March 4 (Itar-Tass) – A case of the death from the so-called swine flu (H1N1 virus) has been registered in Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Territory, a local consumer rights protection authority (Rosnotrebnadzor) official said on Monday.
“The man had stayed home with flu for two weeks before being hospitalized to an intensive care ward, where he died,” Natalia Zhdanova, the head of the regional Rospotrebnadzor office, said at a meeting of the local government.
According to Zhdanova, one more death case presumably from flu has been registered in the region. A resident of the town of Vilyuchinsk was hospitalized two days after he had showed first symptoms of flu. He died in hospital, although “flu infection has not yet been confirmed, laboratory tests are underway,” she said.
Over the past four weeks, about 10,500 Kamchatka residents (3.3 percent of the population) have had flu or acute respiratory diseases, she informed. As many as 23 flu cases have been laboratory confirmed, including 17 H1N1 cases. The Rospotrebnadzor official noted that no severe cases were registered among people who had vaccinated against flu.
As of Monday, two secondary schools in the Yelizovsky districts have been closed over the flu epidemics, and six more schools have been placed in partial quarantine in the Yelizovsky, Karaginsky, Ust-Bolsheretsky, and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky districts. Apart from that, two kindergartens in the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Sobolevsky districts have been put under quarantine as well, she said.
