VLADIVOSTOK, March 2 (Itar-Tass) – A strong snowstorm hit Russia’s Sakhalin Island on Saturday.
General visibility in the island’s south is lower than 100 meters.
The Vanino-Kholmsk ferry service, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport, railway and motor traffic were closed, the press service of the Sakhalin region emergencies department said.
Four ferry boats operating between Vanino and Kholmsk are hiding from the storm in the Tatar Strait and in bays of Russia’s mainland.
Waves in the Tatar Strait are as high as 5 meters and northwest wind velocity reaches 20-24 meters per second.
Temperature in Sakhalin’s south ranges between 6 and 11 degrees below zero.
According to weather forecasters, Sakhalin will be engulfed by the cyclone for two more days.
