KIEV, February 23 (Itar-Tass) – Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich has said that Ukraine has refused to pay Russia’s Gazprom seven billion dollars in fines for gas under-consumption in 2012.
“We refused to pay the fines. Now we are in the process of negotiations,” Yanukovich said in the Dialogue with the Country telecast on Friday.
On January 26 Naftogaz Ukrainy confirmed that Gazprom had billed Ukraine seven billion dollars for gas not purchased in 2012. Naftogaz argues that it complied with all of its financial liabilities to Gazprom in 2012.
In 2012 Naftogaz Ukrainy purchased from Gazprom 24.4 billion cubic meters of gas, which is 39 percent less than in 2011.
According to the gas agreements concluded by the Yulia Timoshenko government in 2009 Naftogaz is obliged to import no less than 33.3 billion cubic meters. Naftogaz says that it had notified Gazprom of the forthcoming import reduction in advance.
