YEKATERINBURG, February 15 (Itar-Tass) - Two children were injured in kindergartens in the city of Kopeisk, the Chelyabinsk Region, as a result of the meteorite fall.
Ambulances were called for the children, the press service of the city administration told Itar-Tass.
Some other children received minor cuts from shattered glass. All received medical care. They do not need hospitalization.
The head of the Kopeisk municipal district, Vyacheslav Istomin, chaired a meeting of the commission on emergencies on Friday. The meeting discussed the event that alarmed the entire Chelyabinsk Region.
On Friday, at 09:21 local time, a bright glow was seen in central Kopeisk, and about two minutes later, a sound wave swept the city.
Radiation is within the normal level there. Radiation and chemical monitoring is underway, the press service reported.
Classes in all the schools in Kopeisk are cancelled. When the schools will open will be announced later in the day. The sound wave shattered windows in many kindergartens and schools. Windows were broken in the settlements of Gornyak, Zheleznodorozhny, Oktyabrsky and Sorok Sedmoy Shakhty, which were most seriously hit. Children from damaged kindergartens are taken to other buildings. There is no threat to lives and health of children.
Other buildings were also damaged. Automatic systems in some boiler rooms stopped working. The work of the boiler rooms will be resumed in an hour, the administration assured.
Gas and electricity are supplied to all the facilities and buildings. Water is also supplied as normal. The systems were not damaged. The local authorities have decided to buy cellophane sheets to give them to all who need to close the damaged windows for the present.
Istomin gave directions to concentrate all the forces on prompt repair of damaged windows, first of in all the kindergartens and schools. At present, windows are closed with cellophane sheets, veneer, with everything to keep homes warm. Then work will begin to fit windows with glass. The city head's reserve funds will be used for the purpose.
A meteorite broke up over the Ural region on Friday morning. Its fragments partially burnt up in the atmosphere. A source at the Central Military District said the military were searching for the meteorite fall crater 50 km away from Kopeisk.
According to the latest reports, about 500 people were injured because of the consequences of the meteorite fall. Five of the people are hospitalized.
