MOSCOW, February 11 (Itar-Tass) – Deputy Head of the Moscow Oncology Institute Sergei Bezyayev was detained on suspicion of taking a bribe of 29 million roubles, press service of Russia’s Interior Ministry told Itar-Tass on Monday.
“Specialists of the Chief Department of Economic Security and Fighting Corruption of the Interior Ministry detained Deputy Head of the Gertsen Moscow Oncology Institute Sergei Bezyayev as he was receiving an illegal remuneration of 29 million roubles,” the press service said.
“The police have learned that jointly with other persons, the official received the remuneration from a representative of a commercial organisation, Grand Medicina, for guaranteed state contracts to supply high technology medical equipment to the institute,” the source said.
The checking of the illegal activities at the institute was organised on the basis of the information, which came from the Ministry of Healthcare. “During the “operational experiment” the official was detained red-handed in his office as he was receiving the illegal remuneration,” the press service said.
The Interior Ministry’s Investigative Department initiated proceedings on fraud on a large scale (Part 4 of Article 159 of the Russian Federation’s Criminal Code). “The suspect has made a confession and is cooperating actively with the investigation,” the source continued saying.
Moscow’s Tverskoy Court chose a preventive measure against Bezyayev in the form of house arrest.
“Presently, specialists of the Interior Ministry’s Chief Department of Economic Security and Fighting Corruption are checking for possible involvement of other persons, including staff of the oncology scientific research institute, in the illegal activities in purchases of medical equipment and distribution of the budget financing allocated for development of high technologies at federal specialised medical facilities,” the source at the Interior Ministry said adding they had been working closely with the Ministry of Healthcare.
