TBILISI, February 9 (Itar-Tass) – Georgia’s President Mikhail Saakashvili is emphatically against the idea of canceling the direct election of the president.

This sort of approach would be “tantamount to stripping the voters of the right to elect the head of state directly,” Saakashvili said in his annual message on the situation in the country.

In the meantime, representatives of the Georgian Dream coalition, which has a majority in parliament, claim that the possibility is being considered of electing the head of state by parliament members.

In their opinion “the election of the president by indirect universal suffrage is a well-tested method in many democratic countries and does not contradict the principle of democracy.”

Georgia’s next presidential election is due in October 2013, when Saakashvili’s term will expire.
