PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, February 4 (Itar-Tass) – Planes operating between the Kamchatka peninsula and the mainland have been stranded till Tuesday because of a cyclone hitting southern Kamchatka, sources from the Yelizovo airport of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky told Tass on Monday.

Flights on peninsula routes have been also cancelled. A plane of Aeroflot flying to Kamchatka from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo international airport has been sent to a reserve airfield in Khabarovsk. Two more planes that were to bring passengers from Khabarovsk to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky will also remain at the reserve airfield till February 5. Flights from Vladivostok and Novosibirsk have been suspended till Tuesday as well.

The main airport of Kamchatka remains open, but pilots themselves decide whether to take off amid adverse weather conditions, airfield control sources said.

The cyclone is still hovering over the southern part of Kamchatka, but it is subsiding, the Kamchatka meteorological service reports. It was at its strongest overnight to Monday and throughout Monday. Wind gusts reached the speed of up to 26 meters per second in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Schools were closed on Monday. Winds intensified to 30 meters per second in coastal areas.
