VLADIVOSTOK, January 10 (Itar-Tass) – Russia’s Far Eastern regions are in the grip of heavy frosts, with air temperatures dropping from 40 to 50 degrees Celsius below zero. The coldest air temperature of minus 53 degrees was registered on Thursday morning in the settlement of Borogontsy in the republic of Yakutia, the Russian meteorological service reports.
School classes have been cancelled in many Yakutian settlements over the frosty weather.
Heavy frosts have claimed a number of human lives. Thus, two elderly persons died of frostbites in Khabarovsk.
Thirty multi-storey residential buildings have been left without heat supplies after a burst of a heating main in Vladivostok on Thursday morning.
According to weather forecasts, heavy frosts will stay in the Far Eastern federal district for at least five days.
