DUSHANBE, January 7 (Itar-Tass) — One Tajik border guard was killed and another one wounded in a shootout in the Khamadoni district on the border with Afghanistan overnight, the main border department of Tajikistan’s national security committee told Itar-Tass on Monday.

“A twenty member group of armed Afghanis entered on makeshift rafts the Tajik shore of the Panj River (also spelled Pyandzh River) and came across our border guards. The shootout began,” the source said.

As a result, two border guards received heavy wounds. One died and another one was hospitalized.

Border guards continue to comb the area.

Last year Tajik border guards together with units of the national security committee prevented over 20 armed attempts to break through the border. They detained over 3 tonnes of drugs and several dozens of firearms.
