MOSCOW, January 7 (Itar-Tass) — The Transcaucasian highway has been closed over heavy snowfall in North Ossetia, spokeswoman for the republic’s emergencies department, Yulia Starchenko, told Itar-Tass on Monday.

“Transkam was closed at 12:30 Moscow time over heavy snowfall that began at night until relevant instructions are given,” she said.

Snow on the slopes exceeds 80 cm. An avalanche threat exists.

“The army will not shoot down snow today over poor visibility,” Starchenko said.

Moreover, the Georgian Military Road, a major automobile artery linking Russia and the countries of South Caucasus – Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, was closed over bad weather conditions in Georgia. Warm-up stations were opened for drivers.
