PRETORIA, January 4 (Itar-Tass) — South Africa's first black African president Nelson Mandela, who was discharged from hospital on the eve of the New Year, "is getting well", his elder grandson Mandla Mandela said on Thursday.
"The Mandela family thanks the people of Souh Africa and all those who were praying for his recovery during his illness," Mandla said.
Ever since Mandela's discharge from hospital, there have been no bulletins about the state of his health. The administration of President Jacob Zuma was only assuring the people that the national hero of the struggle against apartheid was recovering.
Nobel Peace Prize Winner Mandela, who had been ill with tuberculosis during his 27-years-long imprisonment in apartheid times, was hospitalized on December 8 in view of a pulmonary infection backset. Later on an operation was performed on him to remove gallstones.
The former Head of State last appeared in public during the World Soccer Cup Finals held in the Republic of South Africa in 2010.
