MOSCOW, December 24 (Itar-Tass) —— Moscow expects the protection of human rights and freedoms to remain among priorities of the Egyptian powers, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated on Monday.

The ministry noted that, according to preliminary information, over 30 percent of the registered voters participated in the referendum on the draft new Egyptian constitution. Over 60 percent of those who participated in the referendum were for the country‘s draft fundamental law. The new composition of parliament is now to be elected on its basis in accordance with the earlier adopted Constitutional Declaration.

“As is known, the draft constitution met with a controversial reaction in Egypt, causing heated political debates that at times led to protests and even clashes with law enforcers,” the ministry noted.

“We hope that the results of the referendum will serve for the Egyptian leadership as the basis of the course for the implementation of the due reforms in the interests of all strata and groups of the population, which would promote the country‘s democratic development and strengthening of the economy and of the social infrastructure,” the ministry noted. “We expect that ensuring human rights and freedoms, taking into account the interests of religious and ethnic minorities and achieving and preserving public accord on key matters of state construction will remain among priorities in the daily work of Egyptian powers,” the ministry stressed.
