Irkutsk region checking all maternity houses after child kidnapping

IRKUTSK, December 23 (Itar-Tass) — A service inquiry was launched at the maternity house, where a newborn girl was kidnapped on Saturday, December 22, in Angarsk, the press service of the Irkutsk regional government told Itar-Tass with the reference to regional Minister of Health Nikolai Kornilov. The newborn was found quickly and brought back to the maternity house.

The minister also noted that “within next week an inquiry will be conducted to ensure security of all perinatal centres in the Irkutsk Region and the instructions will be given at a meeting with the chief doctors.”

The girl, which was born in Angarsk on December 6 and was being kept under supervision of the doctors, was kidnapped from the ward by a woman in the medical gown under the pretext that the child should be vaccinated. The newborn was found missing two hours later, all Angarsk police were put on alert.

The kidnappers were traced down quite quickly thanks to the vigilance of the taxi service, as the child was being trafficked in a taxi.

The detectives found that the kidnapper had two accomplices. The criminal was detained and the police are about to rule a measure of restraint for her, two accomplices were released on recognizance not to leave the city. The criminal case was opened under Article 126 Part 2 of the Criminal Code for kidnapping of an underage child.

The child and her mother are under supervision of doctors and are estimated to be in satisfactory condition.
