PYONGYANG, December 12 (Itar-Tass) – Democratic People’s Republic of Korea will continue using its legitimate right to satellite launches in the interests of its national economy and upgrading of the people’s living standards, a spokesman for the country’s Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.
He said that Wednesday’s successful launch into orbit of the Kwangmyongsong-3 /Shining Star – 3/ satellite “in line with Kim Jong Il’s behest” has become part and parcel of peaceful efforts in the format of the national scientific and technological program.
The forces hostile to the DPRK claim that the launch was effectuated in defiance of a resolution of the UN Security Council but the use of outer space for peaceful purposes is recognized by international laws and reflects the united will of the international community, the spokesman said.
In the light of it, he called into question the role the UN Security Council is playing in the discussions of the issue.
The spokesman also dismissed as a provocation the claims that North Korea has used the launch of a satellite as a disguise for testing a long-range missile for military purposes, which will eventually lead up to an escalation of tensions.
All the countries concerned should display rational thinking and restraint so as to prevent undesirable developments, he said.
