Former S African President Mandela admitted to hospital for medical tests

PRETORIA, December 8 (Itar-Tass) —— Former South African President Nelson Mandela was admitted to a Pretoria hospital for medical tests on Saturday, December 8.

According to the press service of incumbent President Jacob Zuma, Mandela, 94, feels well.

Presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said there was no cause for concern.

“As said before, former President Mandela will receive medical attention from time to time which is consistent with his age,” he said.

The spokesman did not name the hospital, nor did he specify what kind of tests Mandela will have to take.

Mandela was admitted to hospital in February this year for a diagnostic procedure, which Lindiwe Sisulu, who was defence minister at the time, later said was “an investigative laparoscopy”.

Mandela, the world’s best known political prisoner, became the first president of democratic South Africa after racial segregation had been dismantled, leading the country out of international isolation and eventually paving its way to the Group of Twenty.
