MINSK, December 8 (Itar-Tass) —— The Commonwealth of Independent States over the years of its existence proved to be important and needed, First Deputy Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee Vladimir Garkun said in an interview to Itar-Tass in connection with the 21st anniversary since the signing of the Belovezhye agreements on the Soviet Union breakup and the CIS formation. What the CIS is at present and its prospects are traditionally discussed on the anniversaries.

The Commonwealth's role is greatly important and will remain so, Garkun said. At the CIS head of state summit in Ashgabat on December 5, a declaration was signed on further development of comprehensive cooperation. The CIS leaders in the declaration stated that the CIS formation was prompted by the objective necessity to maintain traditional humanitarian, economic and other ties under the historic conditions of the formation of new independent states, and it predetermined the capability of the commonwealth as an authoritative regional organization, he said.

The document indicates that the CIS countries seek to further develop mutually beneficial and comprehensive cooperation and consolidate the CIS potential. Here are both economic and political components of cooperation, as well as its humanitarian area and security. All is important, the official noted.

On December 8, 1991, the statement was signed in the Viskuli residence in Belovezhskaya Pushcha on the renunciation of the union treaty and on the agreement to form the CIS.
