MOSCOW, December 1 (Itar-Tass) —— Strengthening of Russia's defence capabilities in the troubled world is far from being a question of status, but a vital necessity, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Saturday, speaking at the Assembly of the Foreign and Defence Policy Council.
Exciting of confrontation sentiments in the Euro-Atlantic region is a politically untenable way, a deadlock, Lavrov stressed. "This is absolutely not our choice."
Strengthening of Russia's defence capabilities "in the troubled world around us is not a question of status, but a vital necessity, since only this way the country's security can be reliably guaranteed", the minister noted.
At present, many talk about the factor of force in international relations. Accumulation of elements of tension is a cause of concern, and tension is accumulating, he noted. It is confirmed by the higher intensity of international conflicts, Lavrov said.
"We know what consequences foreign armed interference not sanctioned by the U.N. Security Council in affairs of other states leads to," the minister added.
