Robert Sturua re-appointed artistic director of Shota Rustavelli Theatre

Formally, Sturua was fired for his “xenophobic remarks”

TBILISI, November 30 (Itar-Tass) — The Georgian culture minister has re-appointed Robert Sturua, a Georgian stage director and People’s Artist of the USSR, to the post of artistic director of the Shota Rustaveli State Academic Theatre in Tbilisi. Georgy Tevzadze, the head of the board of governors of the Sturua Production Company, told Itar-Tass that Sturua wouldn’t take his office so long as his position was not formulated in the following way: artistic director and managing director of the Shota Rustaveli Theatre.

Robert Sturua worked at the Shota Rustaveli Theatre for half a century. He was dismissed on August 17, 2011. Formally, Sturua was fired for his “xenophobic remarks”. However, Sturua himself believes that political differences with the country’s leadership were the root cause behind his dismissal.

Sturua’s re-appointment to the post of artistic director indicates that the power in Georgia is changing.
