Russia regrets Ukraine did not support UN resolution on Nazism, Russian mission at the UN said in a statement

Total of 120 member-states voted in support of document, 57 states abstained from voting and three countries voted against it

UNITED NATIONS, November 27 (Itar-Tass) – Russia regrets the fact that Ukraine turned up among the countries, which either voted against or did not support a resolution of the UN General Assembly against the heroization of Nazism, the Russian mission at the UN said in a statement.

The resolution was passed by a majority of votes of the General Assembly member-states Monday.

“The fact that the U.S., Canada and the Marshall Islands voted against the resolution while the delegations of the EU member-states abstained from voting causes astonishment and a sense of deep regret,” the statement said. “Also highly regrettable is the position taken by Ukraine, which preferred to stay away just another time from condemnation of the attempts to heroize Nazism.”

The General Assembly’s Third Committee that monitors the social and humanitarian issues on Monday passed a resolution warning the UN member-states on the inadmissibility of heroizing Nazism and burying in oblivion the barbaric crimes the Nazis committed during the war.

A total of 120 member-states voted in support of the document drafted by Russia in coordination with delegations of another 42 countries, while 57 states abstained from voting and three countries voted against it.

Vassily Nebenzya, the director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s department for humanitarian cooperation and the rights of man said in this connection the approval of the document is a debt of UN member-states to the future generation.

“The resolution condemns the glorification of the Nazi movement and former members of the

Waffen SS organization and any public actions for the purposes of commemorating the Nazi past, as well as pro-Nazi movements and neo-Nazism,” a diplomat at the Russian mission told Itar-Tass.

“Glorifications outrage on the memory of the victims of Nazism, exert a bad impact on the young generations and stand at variance with the obligations of the UN member-states,” he said.

“Hopefully, the adoption of the resolution will send a clear signal to the countries where the need for urgent measures to counteract the itch to heroize Nazism is long overdue,” the diplomat indicated.
