Flights btw Kamchatka, other Russia resume after day-long interval

Aviation experts say weather conditions there still preclude a safe functioning of commercial aviation

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, November 20 (Itar-Tass) – Flights between the Kamchatka Peninsula and other parts of Russia resumed Tuesday afternoon after a day-long break caused by a heavy cyclone, a source at the air controllers service of the airport of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky told Itar-Tass Tuesday.

All the flights connecting Kamchatka with other regions of the country are performed on schedule and the weather conditions are favorable for this, he said.

November 19, the departure of four flights was delayed because of a strong crosswind of up to 18 meters per second.

An Aeroflot jet performing a flight to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport was redirected to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on the island of Sakhalin.

A jet from Novosibirsk and a jet from Khabarovsk had to wait for the relenting of the cyclone at the airport of Khabarovsk, and the takeoff of one more jet was delayed in Vladivostok.

The arrival of all these flights at the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky airport is expected later Tuesday.

In the meantime, cancellation of all the flights between the airports inside Kamchatka remains in effect as they cyclone, which raged over the southern parts of the peninsula Monday, drifted to the central and northern areas Tuesday.
