MOSCOW, November 18 (Itar-Tass) — A shelter with powerful explosive devices was found in a special operation in the Baksan district of Russia’s North Caucasian republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, a spokesman for the National Anti-terrorism Committee told Itar-Tass on Sunday.

After law enforcers killed two gunmen near the settlement of Baksanenok on Saturday, they found a hidden fortified spacious shelter equipped to allow for a long stay there.

“The gunmen refused to enter into talks and opened gunfire at law enforcers who opened return fire. The three gunmen received lethal wounds,” the spoksman said.

The shelter had an entire arsenal of weapons: four home-made explosive devices with an overall yield of about 40 kilograms of TNT, four submachine guns and 17 loading cases, four handguns, including a machine pistol with a silencer, a hand-held grenade launcher and two grenades.

“According to the operations headquarters of the National Anti-terrorism Committee of Kabardino-Balkaria, the killed gunmen were members of the so-called “northeastern sector” of the republic’s bandit gangs. The group was behind numerous grave crimes, including the murder of deputy head of the Russian interior ministry’s anti-extremism centre in Kabardino-Balkaria Kh. Bogatyrev in June 2011, the murder of criminal police officer M. Chechenov in November 2012, the life attempt on traffic police officers A. Ezdekov and Zh. Semyonov in June 2012, the assault on head of the Baksan district administration Kh. Sizhazhayev in May 2012,” the spokesman said.

Currently, the combing operation is underway.

“Four law enforcers received wounds of various gravity,” the spokesman added.
