Russians arrested in Sri Lanka to meet with lawyer on Monday

These people had 250 fake credit cards and 25,000 U.S. dollars in cash they had got from cash machines

NEW DELHI, November 18 (Itar-Tass) —— Russia’ embassy in Sri Lanka has managed to appoint a meeting with five tourists who were arrested here on bank card fraud charges. The embassy also has employed a lawyer for them, a source in the embassy’s consular department told Itar-Tass on Sunday.

“The meeting with the tourists, presumably Russian nations, had been appointed on Monday, November 19. It will be held in the presence of a lawyer we have employed,” the source said. “So far we have received no official notification about the arrest of Russians. We are checking this information. The citizenship of the arrested has not yet been confirmed either.”

Sri Lanka’s police on Sunday said five Russians had been arrested. These people had 250 fake credit cards and 25,000 U.S. dollars in cash they had got from cash machines. “The arrested came to Sri Lank from Russia’s St. Petersburg,” a police source told Itar-Tass but refused to provide the names of these people.

After a civil war was over in Sri Lanka in 2009, the island has won popularity among tourists from various countries as a vacationing destination. According to Sri Lankan tourism administration, as many as 13,300 tourists from Russia visited the country in 2010, a total of 21,300 – in 2011, and 13,300 in January-July 2012.
