Suspect in case of murder of Dagestan official charged

Khabib Umakhanov was extradited from Germany within the case of murder of the head of the Khasavyurt district of Dagestan

MOSCOW, November 14 (Itar-Tass) — The Main Investigation Department of the Russian Investigative Committee (SK) has brought charges against Khabib Umakhanov, extradited from Germany within the case of murder of the head of the Khasavyurt district of Dagestan, SK spokesman Vladimir Markin told Itar-Tass.

Head of the Khasavyurt district Alimsoltan Alkhamatov was killed in Moscow on September 27, 2009, and his bodyguard Nadzhmutdin Mitikov was severely wounded.

“According to the investigation, on September 27, 2009, Gilani Saipov, Zaurbek Magomedov, Khabib Umakhanov, Mikail Kadiyev, as well as their accomplice - Khabib Budaikhanov in the Mercedes S350 car arrived at an apartment house in Novocheremushkinskaya Street in Moscow where Alkhamatov who was on a business trip, lived in a rented apartment. The perpetrators waited until the head of the Khasavyurt district and his guard approached the entrance and fired several shots at them,” the SK representative said.

When fleeing the crime scene, they violated traffic rules, which drew the road police attention. During the chase, the four perpetrators managed to escape, and Budaikhanov, who was the car driver, was arrested.

The court sentenced him to 12 years in a tight security penal colony.

In August this year, Saipov was detained in Dagestan. Magomedov offered armed resistance and was killed by return fire.

Saipov has been charged with murder, intentionally causing serious injury and arms trafficking, he was taken into custody.

Umakhanov and Kadiyev were charged in absentia and a preventive measure in the form of detention was chosen for them. They were put on the international wanted list. The investigators could establish that Umakhanov left Russia and may be hiding in a European country. As a result of operational cooperation with Germany’s law enforcement authorities, he was arrested in Berlin in June, 2012. He requested political asylum in Germany, but his request was turned down. On Tuesday, Umakhanov was extradited from Germany. The same charges as against Saipov were brought against him.

“At present, a complex of investigation and search measures are being taken to find other persons involved in these crimes and the preservation of evidence is underway,” Vladimir Markin said.
