BARNAUL, November 13 (Itar-Tass) — More than 20,000 people living in 40 population centers in the Altai territory, southern Siberia, have been cut off from electric power supplies because of a severe blizzard and gusts of wind, officials at the regional power utility company OAO Altaienergo told Itar-Tass.

About twenty teams of repair workers have been rushed urgently to eliminate the transmission cable ruptures. Bad weather makes it impossible so far to eliminate outages in ten districts of the Altai territory, including a few areas adjoining the territorial capital Barnaul.

In the meantime, the regional Bureau for Hydrometeorology says blasts of wind will likely intensify to 15 meters per second to 20 meters per second by the end of Tuesday and they even get as strong as 28 meters per second. There will be sleet, snowstorm and icing on the roads.

Electricity outages have also affected several thousand people in twelve population centers in the neighboring Republic of Altai.

Svetlana Lyashko, the spokeswoman for the local branch of the Ministry for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense /EMERCOM/ said repair teams had managed to restore the electricity transmission lines leading to six villages.

She gave the assurances that the emergency repairs continue everywhere and the remaining six villages will be re-connected to power lines before the end of the day.
