Former Minister Anatoly Serdyukov handed to Shoigu ‘nuclear briefcase’

Russia’s new Defense Minister accepts command of Strategic Forces

MOSCOW, November 7 (Itar-Tass) — Russia’s newly appointed Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has accepted the command of the country’s Strategic Nuclear Forces, Irina Kovalchuk, the press secretary of the Defense Minister said.

“Early morning Wednesday, Sergei Shoigu accepted command of the Strategic Nuclear Forces in line with his occupational duties,” she said.

Former Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, whom President Vladimir Putin dismissed from office the other day, visited Shoigu Wednesday morning and handed to him the so-called ‘nuclear briefcase’ as to his successor in the ministerial office.

“Prior to accepting the ‘nuclear briefcase’ Shoigu was familiarized in detail with the structure and functions of that super-secret compact device for transmitting the signals that set off the application of the Strategic Nuclear Forces,” Kovalchuk said.
