Ban on ‘Innocence of Moslems’ movie goes into legal effect in Russia

A copy of the court’s decree will be submitted to the Ministry of Justice for inclusion on the movie in the list

MOSCOW, November 6 (Itar-Tass) – Ban on the circulation of the ‘Innocence of Moslems’ movie that was imposed by a ruling of a district court in Moscow has officially taken legal effect in Russia, the court’s Press Secretary Alyona Berezina told Itar-Tass.

She indicated that the court’s ruling has taken legal effect, as no appeals or petitions have been filed against it within the time bracket designated by law.

This means the ‘Innocence of Moslems’ will be included in the federal list of extremist materials prohibited for circulation on the territory of Russia. A copy of the court’s decree will be submitted to the Ministry of Justice for inclusion on the movie in the list.

October 1, 2012, Moscow City’s Tverskoi district court entertained a request by the Prosecutor’s Office to rank the movie as an extremist material not eligible for circulation on the territory of Russia.

The prosecutors substantiated the request by saying the movie contained the footage and text, which aimed to profile Islam as a degenerative religion and to defame its disciples.

“A psychological and linguistic scrutiny of the film done upon a request from the Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that its content pursued the goal of fanning religious hatred and strife, as well as humiliating people on the basis of their ethnic identity or religious affiliation,” a spokesman for the office said.
