Russia does not supply mass destruction weapons to Syria — Lavrov

AMMAN, November 6 (Itar-Tass) — Russia does not supply weapons of mass destruction (WMD) to Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in Amman on Tuesday.

“Russia is surprised that the Western media mislead the international community, saying that we deliver WMD to Syria,” Lavrov said, answering a question of a BBC reporter. According to him, the weapons that are supplied to Syria from Russia are delivered under the previously reached agreements and are linked exclusively with missile defence elements.

Meanwhile, Lavrov pointed out, Moscow has reliable information that some 50 Stinger surface-to-air missiles (SAM) are in the Syrian territory in the hands of the opposition. “I would like to reiterate again that any violations of international humanitarian law by the government and the opposition are unacceptable,” Lavrov stated. “And those who arm the Syrian opposition, they supply not defensive weapons," Lavrov said. He stressed that “we do not justify the regime, we denounce its atrocities, but it is inadmissible to fight against atrocities with terrorist attacks.”

Lavrov also said that “at present there is no threat of the use of chemical weapons in Syria.”
