VIENTIANE, November 6 (Itar-Tass) — Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, who spoke at a plenary session of the Asia-Europe Meeting in the Lao capital on Tuesday, dwelt on the situation in Syria.
“The situation in Syria arouses the greatest concern. Russia’s position in based on the idea that the future of that country must be in the hands of the Syrian people rather than be determined by international structures or any other forces. The biggest task of today is to find ways to help them do it,” Medvedev stressed.
Touching on North Korea’s nuclear program, the Russian prime minister noted that there was no alternative to the political and diplomatic settlement of the nuclear problem of the Korean Peninsula. “It is necessary to waste no time and resume the six-party talks,” he urged.
“It is also vital to continue dialogue on the Iranian nuclear problem as well,” he stressed. “Russia’s position is that any state, including Iran, has the right to develop civil nuclear programs but it is necessary to ensure international control over such activities,” Medvedev noted.
