Lavrov to meet Brahimi in Cairo to discuss Syrian settlement

CAIRO, November 4 (Itar-Tass) —— Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet in Cairo with Joint Special Envoy of the United Nations and the League of Arab States for the Syrian Crisis, Lakhdar Brahimi, to discuss the implementation of the Geneva communiqu· and to consider variants of deployment of U.N. observers in Syria, for which ends a new resolution of the United Nations Security Council might be needed, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Russia president’s Middle East envoy Mikhail Bogdanov said on Sunday.

“They are going to be comprehensive talks,” he said. “The key focus will be made on the Syrian crisis. We shall spell out Russia’s approach based on the imperative implementation of the Geneva communiqu· with a special emphasis on the need of establishing an intra-Syrian dialogue to reach a complete and secured ceasefire.”

“When we say secured, we are ready to consider variants of deployment of U.N. observers and peacekeepers under as agreed with the Syrian government,” Bogdanov said and added that it “requires a relevant resolution of the United Nations Security Council.”
