NIZHNY NOVGOROD, November 4 (Itar-Tass) —— Police detained at least 20 participants in an authorized opposition rally in the city of Nizhny Novgorod on Sunday, deputy chief of public order department of the regional police department Andrei Shmonin reported.
According to Shmonin, police started to detain protesters after they blocked traffic along one of the city’s central streets and used smoke pots. Apart from that, a man was detained near the venue of the rally, who had several tear gas spray cans. “They had got prepared for their action, during which they sought to tear headpieces from policemen or to hurt them,” he said.
The city administration, in his words, issued no permission to hold the rally because its organizers had already been brought to administrative responsibility.
The detained were taken to a local police station to draw protocols. Later, the police will send the materials to the Investigations Committee.
Shmonin stressed that policemen had not used rubber truncheons against the protesters.
Another action, the Russian March, which was sanctioned by the authorities, was held in Nizhny Novgorod on Sunday. About 400 people took part in this action. Police reported no violations of public order during this march.
