KIEV, October 31 (Itar-Tass) — Around 2,300 hacker attacks on the websites of Ukraine’s president and Central Election Commission were repelled during the parliamentary elections on Sunday, the local media reported on Wednesday with reference to the State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection.
On October 28 the DDoS attacks affected the operation of the websites of the president and the Central Election Commission.
“The power of the strongest attack reached 62Mbit/s,” the service said. “The geography of attacks was diversified – 64 percent from Ukraine’s territory and 31 percent from countries of the Asia-Pacific Region.”
“During 24 hours 2,300 hacker attacks were registered that if not repelled could disrupt integrity and authenticity of the information placed on the websites of the president and the Central Election Commission,” the service said. “Experts successfully localized and blocked the attacks.”
The State Service for Special Communications did not mention attacks on other websites.
At the same time independent experts noted that a real cyber war has been waged for the first time in the history of Ukraine’s elections.
Hackers paralyzed the operation of websites of contradicting political forces – the ruling Party of Regions on the one hand and the opposition forces – on the other hand.
Moreover, personal websites of opposition leaders – Yulia Timoshenko, Alexander Turchinov and Arseny Yatsenyuk – and websites of non-governmental organizations were also attacked by hackers.
