RME issues warning about possible emergencies in Leningrad Reg

MOSCOW, October 31 (Itar-Tass) — The Russian Ministry for Emergencies (RME) has circulated an urgent warning about possible emergency situations owing to a heavy snowfall in Leningrad Region.

An official at the RME information department has told Itar-Tass, "According to Roshydromet forecast, a heavy snowfall is expected in Leningrad Region at night and in the morning of October 31, with poor visibility over a distance of 500 metres and less".

In view of the upcoming deterioration of weather conditions, the RME's Anti-Stikhia (anti-elements) Center is forecasting the likelihood of emergency situations connected with ruptures of the wires of power transmission lines, and those of communication lines, collapse of inadequately secured large-size advertising billboards, and an increase in the number of road incidents on federal, regional and local roads.

"Limitations in the operation of aviation at base airfields and at helicopter pads, and difficulties in the conduct of damage-control operations are possible as well," the RME official said.
