RF to insist on return for UN observer mission to Syria — Lavrov

“Now there are no plans to send the observer mission," U.N./LAS Special Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi noted

MOSCOW, October 29 (Itar-Tass) — Russia will call for returning the U.N. observer mission to Syria, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

After the talks with U.N./LAS Special Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi on Monday, Lavrov said this could be done only in compliance with the U.N. Security Council decision and with accord by the Syrian authorities.

“We will insist on returning the U.N. observer mission to Syria,” the Russian minister said.

Brahimi noted, “Now there are no plans to send the observer mission. The work is being done if any emergency situations occur.”

According to Lavrov, military hostilities are escalating in Syria. Moscow urges all Syrian parties to come to the negotiating table. Russian Foreign Minister stressed that Russia “aims at supporting the United Nations and the League of Arab States in their activity towards the settlement of the situation in Syria”.

The most important thing is to encourage Syrians to sit down to talk so that all external players use their influence to send the same signals (to the parties), he emphasized.

Also Sergei Lavrov holds that all external force must fully sense responsibility for the conduct of those whom they support in Syria.

“A veritable war is on in Syria,” the foreign minister said after the talks with Lakhdar Brahimi. “Violence is spiraling. Provocations quite often prompt inadequate response. In view of this, all external forces must fully sense responsibility for the conduct of those whom they support in Syria,” Lavrov stressed.

“We are ready for this, and we tackle this. We call on all our partners, including those we met in Geneva, to act like this,” he added.
