Mikhail Prokhorov ready to head political party

MOSCOW, October 27 (Itar-Tass) —— Businessman Mikhail Prokhorov has stated he is ready to head the Civic Platform party, which holds a congress in Moscow this Saturday.

It is up to the political committee, he said. The congress is expected to elect a political committee this Saturday. The committee will meet then to elect a party chairman.

Prokhorov confirmed he was among the candidates to the committee.

Earlier at the congress he announced he joined the Civic Platform ranks.

Together with Prokhorov, on the list of candidates to the political committee are public activist Rifat Shaikhutdinov, colonel of Department "A" of the FSB special-purpose centre Sergei Militsky, head of an association of election observers Ksenia Zelentova, TV journalist Alexander Lyubimov, member of the Perm Territory's legislature and director-general of the Perm energy supply company Dmitry Orlov, ex-minister of labour Alexander Pochinok, member of the Kaliningrad regional Duma Solomon Ginzburg, president of the Primorsky Territory's federation of water motor sports Yuri Ryabko, director of a federal organization from Ivanovo Andrei Nazarov and Siberian contemporary art centre director Anna Tereshkova.

The congress also formed a federal civil committee. Among the members of the committee are co-chairman of the Republic Party of Russia-PARNAS Vladimir Ryzhkov, Togliatti Mayor Sergei Andreyev, Yaroslavl's head Yevgeny Urlashov, lawyer Mikhail Barshchevsky, journalist Stanislav Kucher, musician Andrei Makarevich and singer Alla Pugachova.

The committee also includes Mikhail Prokhorov's sister Irina, founder and chief doctor of the Intermedcentre clinic Alexander Myasnikov, director-general of the Foreign Literature Library Yekaterina Geniyeva, executive vice-president of TNK-BP Mikhail Slobodin, member of the board of the National Anticorruption Committee Vladimir Denisov and head of the foundation City without Drugs Yevgeny Roizman.

The party will also have regional committees and institutions of supporters.

The congress took place in the Russian Academy of Sciences. The large hall of the academy has seats for 1,000 people. Aside from 110 delegates from 51 Russian regions, there are many guests and supporters of Prokhorov.

Prokhorov recalled that at the congress of the Right Cause party that took place in the same hall he refused to play according to "the Kremlin rules". In the building, Prokhorov met with voters during the presidential election campaign. The polling station where Vladimir Putin vote is located in the same building. "History has peculiar sense of humor," Prokhorov noted.
