TOKYO, October 25 (Itar-Tass) — Mutual territorial claims are a major threat to security in the Asia Pacific region, according to secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev.
“Along with common threats, such as terrorism, extremism, illegal migration and drug trafficking, a major threat in the Asia Pacific region is territorial claims of states to each other,” Patrushev told journalists on Thursday, commenting on the results of his visit to Japan. “Russia stands for solving such problems through a dialogue and political and diplomatic means.”
He said that his talks with the Japanese top-ranking officials touched upon the problems of the Senkaku (Diaoyu) Islands in the East China Sea. These islands are controlled by Tokyo but Beijing claims these uninhibited islands are occupied Chinese territories. “Russia will not takes sides in this dispute,” Patrushev stressed. “Japan and China must solve this problem through a dialogue.”
While in Tokyo, Patrushev met with Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba, and signed a protocol of cooperation between the Russian Security Council and Japan’s foreign ministry.
