SOCHI, October 23 (Itar-Tass) — The 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi will start in 500 days. They will be held on March 7 - 16 at the same arenas where the Olympic Games will be held before them.
The Russian Black Sea resort city won the right to host the Olympics on July 4, 2007 at the 119th IOC Session in Guatemala. This will be the first Winter Olympic Games in Russia.
The history of the Winter Paralympic competitions dates back to 1976, when they were first held in Ornskoldsvik, Sweden. And the idea of ··holding competitions for people with disabilities belongs to British neurosurgeon Ludwig Gutmann, who introduced sports in the program of rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injury. His practical studies have shown that physical activity helps people with disabilities to adapt faster, enjoy a full life, to restore mental balance and enhance physical strength.
In connection with the start of the 500-day countdown to the 2014 Paralympic Games many festive events will be held the centre of which will be Sochi. A Paralympic lesson with the participation of famous athletes will be given in the Park of Equal Opportunities in the city’s central square during which artistic collectives will perform and all will be able to skate on a specially prepared rink.
